Ovary

The female gonad, or ovary, is responsible for producing and releasing the hormones essential to normal menstruation and pregnancy. The ovaries also release an ovum for transport through the Fallopian tube into the uterus once each month. If this egg is fertilized, conception occurs and the egg will implant in the uterine lining, beginning pregnancy.
