Gas normally found in the atmosphere that is essential for our bodies' metabolism. The lungs take oxygen from the atmosphere and allow it to bind to the hemoglobin in the blood. The blood then transports the oxygen to the body tissues. When babies’ lungs are sick or immature, they must breathe in extra oxygen so they can get enough oxygen into the blood. Babies with very poorly functioning lungs require ventilators to help their lungs work properly.
