Also known by its abbreviation, STD, or sexually transmitted infection, this term includes numerous bacterial and viral infections, and some fungal, parasitic, and protozoan infestations. An STD is a disease transmitted through sexual contact between two people, either through the exchange of semen, blood, and other body fluids, or by direct body contact. The term venereal disease, or VD, is a more old-fashioned name for the same group of diseases.
Sexually transmitted diseases include, but are not limited to:
- Bacterial vaginosis
- Chancroid
- Chlamydia
- Genital herpes
- Gonorrhea
- HIV/AIDS
- Human papillovirus (HPV), a cause of genital warts and other ailments
- Molluscum contagiosum
- Nongonococcal urethritis
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- Scabies
- Syphilis
- Trichomoniasis
- Viral hepatitis
