Death of a fetus while it is still in the uterus after the 20th week of pregnany. When this fetus is born, it has no signs of life (breathing, heart beat, moving on its own) and is considered a stillbirth. About 1 out of every 200 births is a stillbirth. There are many causes of stillbirth, from defects in the fetus to problems with the placenta to infections.
