Syphilis is an infectious disease most often spread through sexual contact. (The bacteria that cause this disease spread through broken skin or mucous membranes.) Syphilis is widespread in the United States. It mainly involves sexually active adults between ages 20 to 29.
A pregnant woman infected with syphilis can pass the disease to the baby developing in her womb. (This is called congenital syphilis.)
