Disorder of pregnant women characterized by elevated blood pressure, swelling of the feet and hands and loss of protein in the urine (see pre-eclampsia). The cause of toxemia is not known. It is more common in women with twins, high blood pressure before pregnancy and in those who are pregnant for the first time. If severe, toxemia of pregnancy may progress to serious problems for both mother and child.
