Glucophage was the first commercially available brand of metformin, an oral diabetes medicine that helps control blood sugar levels. Glucophage, developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb, is for people with non-insulin-dependent diabetes. It is sometimes used in combination with insulin or other medications, but it is not for treating type 1 diabetes. It is sometimes prescribed for women with PCOS, as insulin resistance is a common symptom of that disorder. Generic metformin is now available, as are other brands, such as Riomet, Fortamet, Glumetza, Diabex, Diaformin, and others.
