The body's defenses for fighting disease and infection. The immune system produces antibodies and special cells that attack viruses and bacteria. Antibodies and other factors in breast milk can increase the breastfed infant's ability to fight infection. Prematurely born infant's immune systems are not fully developed and they are more susceptible to illness than infants born at term.
