Narrowness of the opening of the prepuce, or foreskin, preventing its being drawn back over the glans (the “head” of the penis).
The term can be confusing, especially regarding infants, because most boys are born with a non-retracting foreskin as a normal stage of development, but later phimosis would be considered a pathological condition. Phimosis has become a contentious topic in circumcision discussions.
Treatment can be surgical, if symptoms are very problematic, though people have successfully used steroidal creams and manual stretching over time to treat the condition.
