Organ within the uterus that provides communication between mother and fetus through the umbilical cord. The placenta enables oxygen and nutrients to pass from the maternal blood to the fetus. It also eliminates carbon dioxide and waste products from the baby by passing them to the mother, who excretes them with her liver, kidneys or lungs. It is a disk shaped organ and at term weighs around 500 grams.
