Positive End Expiratory Pressure (PEEP)
Positive pressure applied to the airway and lungs to keep some air in the lungs after each breath with a tube either in the nose or airways. PEEP helps to keep the air sacs in the lung inflated during exhalation and counteracts the natural tendency of the air sacs to collapse. This tendency is especially serious if the lungs are immature, as found in premature babies.
