A female hormone produced by the ovary in the corpus luteum following ovulation. Progesterone prepares the uterine lining for implantation and contributes to maintaining pregnancy in the first weeks after implantation. Some scientific reports suggest that some women have repeated miscarriages because they do not produce enough progesterone. However, progesterone supplementation in women with naturally low levels has not consistently been effective in preventing miscarriage.
