Your Clever Toddler in Week 65: Why TV Is a Bad Babysitter

Week 65 Brain Booster

So what's a parent to do? You need to take a shower and you know your toddler will sit glued to the TV while you do so, what's the harm? Then you need to make a phone call, answer email, make a cake for playgroup...

As tempting as it is to pop in a DVD before you turn on the water, instead set your child in his crib with a highly interesting toy available only for your times in the shower. Your child will be engaged as he eagerly explores it. You can use a similar tactic when you need to make a phone call or answer a couple of pressing email messages: Break out some blocks that only come out when you're trying to work on your to-do list. (And forget the cake until your child naps.)

You'll be less tempted to turn on the TV or the DVD player if you keep them in a designated room away from the main living spaces in your home. After all, these highly attractive viewing devices, if relied upon in excess, could harm your child's developing brain.
