Week 2 Potty Project: Set an Open-Door Policy

First read this week's potty lesson, then move on to the project below.

Your Week 2 Assignment

If you’ve a son, encourage Dad to allow him in the bathroom with him. Typically boys learn to use the toilet later than girls. Why? Only because moms are usually the ones involved in potty training. Therefore boys are at a disadvantage because they realize that they are different from mom and so on their own must determine how to make the appropriate adjustments.

If Dad demonstrates, he makes the process so much easier for his young son. If you’re a single mom teaching your son to use the potty, you can ask Grandpa or an Uncle to demonstrate. If you’re a single dad teaching your daughter, do likewise with Grandma or an Auntie.

Week 2 Toilet Training Tip

When a newly accomplished potty user—friend or cousin—comes to play, ask if your child can watch him or her use the toilet. If he or she is willing, it’s all the better for your child: It’s inspiring for a learner to watch a not-much-older friend or cousin use the toilet. If your child is in childcare, she’ll likely learn lots by watching her peers.
