How to Fake Looking Awake
Crying babies or pregnancy aches or plain old stress got you sleep deprived? Here are some tricks to hide it.
Start with the Eyes
If the eyes are, as the poets say, the windows to your soul, they’ll be the first to give away how exhausted that soul is! Take care of them and dress them up to fight the look of fatigue. For puffy eyes, drink plenty of water, try not to rub, remove contact lenses at night, and wash off the day’s makeup before bed. Cucumber slices on your eyes (or cold, wet teabags) for five minutes really will reduce puffiness. Anything cold will have an anti-inflammatory effect, but the caffeine in tea and an astringent property of cucumber will also help tighten things up. Something to Hide?
Concealer can be your best friend when the dark circles just won’t go away. Nothing screams “I’m tired!” like those dark circles. Gently smudge your favorite concealer on those dark spots. You can then follow that with a light application of your favorite base. Instant refresher!
Your Moment in the Sun
Well, almost. A bronzer will smooth out your skin tones and give you a sun-kissed look that can make you look less run down. (Remember that expression, “Tanned, rested, and ready?” Those things go easily together in the mind of the beholder!) If you are very pale, powders may work best for avoiding the “orange” look. If you have dark skin, look for a luminizing bronzer, rather than one that just makes skin darker, to bring out red tones in black skin to add radiance.

To give your face a subtle glow (almost like you’d gotten eight hours of sleep!), you might try a highlighter, or illuminator, as it is sometimes called. Highlighters are lotions or creams with light-reflecting qualities that can be worn on your browbone, cheekbones, and on the bridge of your nose.

More Tricks on the Eyes

Apply a nude shade of lipstick or gloss for daytime, as in bright lighting it will look more natural than a dark color and lend your face an even tone. If you have light-colored brows, use a powder to darken.

If you can’t keep up with regular salon visits for an elegant but no-fuss cut, grow it long enough to pull back, or use pomade or wax to give it some structure. Even if your fully-rested style is a bit tousled, a little product will help you look like you didn’t just wake up in the nursery-room glider.
