Lots of Junk in Jessica's Trunk

Have Jessica Simpson's pregnancy cravings gone too far?

by Jacqueline Tourville

Dark leafy greens and whole grains? Not for mom-to-be Jessica Simpson. So just what is she eating?

The Scoop

Jessica Simpson is opening up about the foods her pregnancy-enhanced taste buds just have to have, and let's put it this way, it's not likely that you will find her favorites at your neighborhood health food store anytime soon.

With her pregnancy appetite "through the roof," Jessica explains to Extra TV, "I ate a buttered Pop Tart for breakfast. I'm eating a lot of stuff that I ate in my childhood. Kraft Mac n' Cheese, Pop Tarts, Cap'n Crunch. Everything's filled with sugar."

Jessica says she is not concerned about watching what she eats and is happy to "give into my cravings," reports the UK's Telegraph newspaper. "I'm like, 'Yeah, I can do it. We'll worry about the rest afterwards,'" Jessica admits.

Your Health

Everyone loves a glowing, happy pregnant lady—and this certainly seems to be Jessica these days! But is the star giving her cravings too free a rein? While there's no denying that most women experience powerful urges to eat certain foods during pregnancy, it is possible to prevent cravings from ruling your prenatal diet.

For starters, try limiting portions of foods you are craving. If you just have to have macaroni and cheese, have a small side dish to go with your main course salad at lunch—instead of the other way around. Another way to lessen the impact of food cravings is to zero in on the exact taste and texture you are seeking, and then look for healthier food choices that are a good match. If what you want is crunchy and salty, try a handful of roasted, lightly salted almonds, rather than potato chips.

And if your taste buds are telling you to eat something sweet and buttery? Toast a slice of whole grain bread and smear with a teaspoon each of butter and jam. Top with fresh sliced strawberries for extra sweetness—and some extra fiber and vitamin C.
