Because no busy mom needs a case of the sickies to slow her down, Tia’s also sharing some important tips about what she’s doing to keep her family healthy during cold and flu season.
What is your Golden Rule of parenting?
For me, the golden rule is to forgive yourself. Being a mom now for a few years, I know that everyone wants to be the perfect mom and do everything perfectly. But the reality of the situation is that nothing is perfect. There are going to be days when you spend more time with your child, and there are going to be days when don’t spend as much time your child. There are going to be days when your child gets hurt and you weren’t present, whether they were at school or daycare, or with their grandparents, or the nanny. We tend to beat ourselves up over things like this, so I think the golden rule is forgive yourself, trust your instincts, and know that it’s going to be okay.
What’s the best part of being a mom so far?
Seeing my son grow! Seeing him go from being a newborn who could only cry to being able to say, “ma ma,” and “da da” — to now being able to express what he wants and what he likes and dislikes. Just seeing him grow into a person is the cutest thing! It’s also overwhelming how beautiful it is.
What’s the worst part?
Lack of sleep! When you’ve got mommy brain, you’re constantly worrying about what your child is doing, you’re worrying if everything else is okay, and at the same time, you are trying to function without sleep. When I was pregnant, I asked other moms I knew what I should do to prepare for motherhood. Every single one told me to sleep now — but I was like, “Whatever!” Well, they were right. Everything is that much more difficult when you are not getting the proper amount sleep.
What’s the best advice you’ve gotten?
The best advice I’ve been given is to make health a priority — for the whole family. My life is hectic to say the least. I’m an entrepreneur, I’m an actress, I’m a producer, an author, a wife, a sister – the list goes on and on – but first and foremost I’m a mother. And as with most families, in my family, if Mom gets sick, everything shuts down. So for that reason, we eat extremely healthily, focusing on fresh, natural foods. And we make an effort to live a very active lifestyle. Even little Cree (who is only 2) walks around the block once a day! Also, hand washing is huge in my house year-round, but especially during cold and flu season.
And on that note, one other piece of very valuable advice I’ve gotten recently was regarding flu vaccination. Previously I hadn’t paid much attention – I REALLY don’t like needles – but my doctor recently told me that everyone over 6 months should get a vaccine each year, as it’s the best way to protect against the flu – which can be very serious. So I decided to make flu vaccine a priority for my family and am excited to be a part of FluMist Quadrivalent’s campaign to encourage other families to do the same. As you can see in the funny video we made together, I decided the needle-free, nasal spray flu vaccine was the best choice for me and my family and I feel it’s important that all parents have that conversation with their doctor.
As a mom, what’s the one thing you can’t live without?
My CityMini stroller! It’s the best “on the go” stroller. As a working mom, I’m always on the go and having this lightweight, easy to assemble stroller is a must. One touch and the stroller opens up. It’s fantastic.
Finish this sentence, you know you’re in the Baby Zone when…
You’re rushing out for a workout early in the morning and forgot your water bottle, so you use the sippy cup you leave in your bag instead!
