In the Zone with Sarah Rafferty
Sarah Rafferty, who plays Donna Paulsen on the hit show Suits, talks about her life at home with her two little girls, ages 2 and 6.
As the USA Network’s hit show Suits nears its season three cliffhanger, fans of the law firm drama can’t get enough of Donna Paulsen, the boss’s executive assistant who may just be one of Manhattan’s most formidable legal minds. Donna is played by actress and mother-of-two, Sarah Rafferty. Rafferty may not share Donna’s legal know-how, but she sure does know a thing or two about the ups and downs of being a busy working mom. BabyZone recently caught up with Sarah to find out how she keeps life with her two daughters in balance.
What’s your golden rule of parenting?
‘Run your own race’ when it comes to parenting. Don’t judge other parents, and don’t compare and despair. For the most part, everyone is doing the best they can under their own unique set of frequently stressful circumstances. Cut them some slack. Also, just because I may not have the skill set to run the school book fair, bake a 3D Olaf cake or harvest daily delicious dinners from my own organic garden, doesn’t mean I’m not being the best mom I can be.
Describe the best moment of parenting so far.
When my 6-year-old comes home from school and my 2-year-old screams, “my sister” as they leap into each others arms–I feel like we’ve done something right.
And the worst?
So I may not have exhibited the best “model behavior” when my husband brought my 5-year-old to a school event in nothing but her see-through ballet tights and a regular-sized T-shirt. Somehow the skirt had been left at home, along with my ability to laugh it off in the moment. The sight of those polka dot underpants sure makes me giggle now though.
What’s the best advice you’ve gotten so far?
Don’t try to make a happy baby happier.
What’s the one thing you can’t live without?
A bathtub large enough for me and my two girls.

You frantically use your one free hand to search for your iPhone in the diaper bag while you are talking on it.
