What's your golden rule of parenting?
Be nice to yourself. Nobody knows how to do any of this stuff perfectly. Nap when you can. Take a walk when you can. Drink a glass of water with a fresh chunk of lemon in it. Be sweet to yourself.
Describe the best moment of parenting so far.
Wow, that's tough. There are so many moments. It's all about the moments. I remember, during childbirth, feeling like the most powerful creature on the planet—that was a good one. The moment my daughter first said "I love you"—that little voice filled with emotion brought just about more joy than I could handle. Last week, after preschool, I asked her who her best friend was, and she looked at me, kind of confused, and said, "You, mama."
And the worst?
Tantrums. By far. My daughter's is 3 1/2 and does NOT like change of any kind. I moved a box of stuffed animals from her room to her closet, and it was ARMAGEDDON. I'm still trying to navigate those situations. I pray a lot.
Best advice you ever got
"You will know what to do." My friend, Eva, said that to me when my daughter was a week old. I was pouring over every book I could find, and she just kept repeating that phrase to me. I thought she was nuts, until, one night, when Grace was shaking and crying, I just KNEW. I just KNEW how to make it better. When I got really quiet and just listened, I knew exactly what she needed. Eva was right.
What's the one thing you can't live without?
I'm afraid at this point, it's my iPhone. That thing allows me to take care of a zillion work-related issues quickly, wherever I am, giving me so much more time with my family.
