Shop Farmers’ Markets
It’s hard to choose unwisely at a farmers’ market and there are few labels to read. Locate farmers’ markets or community-supported agriculture here:
Join a Food Co-op
Pick up or have a “mystery” box of fresh, seasonal produce delivered, and discover a new fruit or veggie. (Find a co-op through Local Harvest.)
If you want to shop during your child’s naps or late at night, do all your homework on the computer and have the food delivered to your door. This also lets you avoid store tantrums. (Many major supermarkets offer online ordering and delivery through your local stores. Grow a Community Garden
Plant at home or at school. This won’t eliminate all your shopping, but it will teach your child about agriculture and allow her to get her hands dirty. Get started (or inspired) here:
This is a great hands-on experience that engages a child’s five senses: touching the plants, smelling the soil, tasting the ripe fruits and veggies, seeing how things grow, and hearing the sounds of animals and machinery.
