"Like everything in life, the more you plan and the more you prepare, the more likely things will turn out OK," Dr. Seibel adds.

Are You Emotionally Ready?

Moms know that raising children isn't easy—and adding a newborn to the mix creates new family dynamics that take some adjustment and patience (especially from sleep-deprived parents!). You must also consider the emotional needs of children you already have. Are they ready for a new sibling?

The APA recommends that women address whether they are emotionally prepared to handle the additional stress related to adding a child to the family. Consider how far apart your children will be or whether you'll have more than one in diapers, for example, and also assess whether your family is financially prepared to absorb the additional responsibilities of another child.

"Finally, as a couple, they should answer the question as to whether both partners are on the same page about wanting a child at this time," Dr. Imler says.
