Why Buying a New Phone is Like Having a Baby
I’m due this month—for an upgrade, that is! I ordered my pretty new iPhone 5s last week, and as I wait impatiently for its arrival, it occurs to me: buying an iPhone is a lot like having a baby.

The wait seems to last forever. The closer you get, the more slowly time passes. You hear urban legends about how people got theirs early, but no one seems to be able to give you a clear answer as to exactly when you’ll get yours.
“Any day now,” they tell you. (And still, you wait.)

Labor and Delivery
You show up to get yours at a vast and mysterious place where everyone walks quickly and with purpose. There are bright lights and complicated terms you don’t understand. You leave feeling confused, emotionally spent and financially broke, but it doesn’t matter because you have your “baby.”
Public Displays of Affection
Before you get yours, you’re annoyed by people who can’t stop posting on Facebook about how awesome theirs is. After you get yours, you become one of those people.
Did You Hear That
While you’re still figuring out how it works, every noise is new and unfamiliar. You jump at every chirp, hum and wail. After the getting-to-know you phase, you learn which noises require urgent attention, and which ones don’t.

Do Not Disturb
No one need bother talking to you about anything other than your new arrival for the first month after you get it. You just can’t get enough.
It's True. All of It.
Some people say “OMG! My life is forever changed. This is God’s gift to mankind!” and other people say “OMG! I can’t figure this thing out for the life of me. Help!”
(And the thing is, they’re both right.)

Handle With Care
For the first few months you handle it ever so carefully, afraid of breaking it with the slightest misstep. As the newness wears off you realize it’s pretty indestructible (though you still have nightmares about it falling into a body of water).

The retailers will suck you in with adorable matching accessories. You don’t need them, but you’ll probably buy them anyway.

Time for an Uprgrade
After about a year and a half you’re still completely in love…but you can’t help thinking about the next one.
