Q&A: How do I track my ovulation after Depo-Provera?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I was on the Depro-Provera until July 2003. In September 2003 I took the Depo pills to start my cycle and start trying to have a baby. I had a period in October, then November 21 and then clock work December 20th (which was extremely heavy) I was scheduled to start on Jan 18th but started a week early on Jan 11th and it was extreamly heavy as well. I was worried about a possible miscarriage. I took a pregnancy test that week and it was negative, but it was so early. What could cause this. I am also concerned because my blood type is O Neg and I am afraid if is was a miscarriage and then I get pregnant now without the shot I could be in harm. Also if this was just an eary period, how do I track ovulation for this month?

It can take up to two years for cycles to get back to normal after DepoProvera, although usually it's back by about six months or so. Since your periods are irregular, you probably need some hormonal blood determinations, including a serum HCG to allay your worries over a possible miscarriage.
