Q&A: What are birth control options for breastfeeding moms?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I plan to breastfeed my baby, and I am curious about what options I have for birth control. I am allergic to latex so condoms are not an option. Thanks!

Depo-Provera can be used. Additionally, most OBs currently feel that using a low-dose birth control pill is quite safe. Ask your doctor. The progesterone-only pill offers less of an exposure risk, but is not quite as fool-proof. An IUD can be used, but I personally don't recommend them (more trouble than they're worth)!
