Q&A: Can you get pregnancy-like symptoms during menopause?

I'm concerned about my aunt. She's 37, she's had her tubes tied (tubal ligation) but now she's experiencing a lot of pregnancy symptoms. Along with nausea, she's extremely sensitive to smells. Could she be pregnant or are these symptoms also seen in premenopause?

The failure rate of tubal ligation is 1 in 300. Anything's possible, but I would guess it's not a pregnancy. Also, your aunt is a little young for menopause. She needs a checkup as thyroid conditions—or even epilepsy—can cause symptoms similar to the ones you're describing. However, it's more than likely that these are just an unusual set of symptoms that will go away as mysteriously as they came. But it wouldn't hurt for you to suggest to your aunt that she see her healthcare provider!
