Gift Idea: Wine
Wine is a sophisticated and elegant gift that can help someone who spends a large part of the day singing the ABC song feel valued and acknowledged as a fellow grown up. Which wines are best to give? Mom of two Alissa Leenher, who blogs about wine at SAHMmelier, advises parents to use what they already know about their caregiver to guide the way to the perfect vintage. “If you know their wine taste, that helps, but if not, pick a grape, region, or style that suits them. Are they planning a trip to the Northwest U.S.? Choose a Pinot Noir from the Willamette Valley. Studying Spanish? A Rioja might fit the bill. Maybe they are reading a novel set in South Africa or dream of visiting Italy. Start with that.”
For help narrowing the field, stop by a wine shop to see what’s available in your price range. However, in the end, Leenher says that what’s in the bottle matters less than the sentiment behind it. According to the SAHMmelier, “When it is a gift, there is nothing to lose. The thoughtful gesture and opportunity to learn stands whether they enjoy the wine or not.” Check out her blog for wine reviews and suggestions!
Gift Idea: Cash
Giving cash as a gift or holiday bonus to nannies, daycare providers, and other paid caregivers is pretty standard—and appreciated! But how much to give? Etiquette guidelines can vary but you may want to consider gifting the equivalent of at least one day’s pay (a half-week or full week’s pay are other common options). Some parents give their nanny or caregiver a paid vacation over the holidays or stick with a dollar amount that would be the equivalent of what they would spend shopping for a gift (i.e., $50). Whatever amount you decide on, just make sure to present it in a card inscribed with a meaningful note. Even when it’s money, it’s still the thought that counts!

Gift Idea: Gift Cards
Is your nanny never without her cup of Starbucks in the morning? Do you know how much your sitter loves shopping at American Eagle? A gift card to a favorite coffee shop or store is a thoughtful way to say, “I’ve noticed what you like!” On the other hand, if you don’t know her favorite type of coffee, restaurant, or shop, don’t try to guess! This is part of the reason why millions of gift cards go unclaimed every year.
