Creating the Perfect Bedroom for Your Child

Kids need their own special hideaway, but their decorating tastes are usually a little wilder than those of an adult. That's OK! Your child's wild tastes can be exactly what makes decorating fun. If you're planning a redecorating project for your kids, everyone will be happier in the end if both the kids and the adults have a hand in the planning. Think imagination. Think creative. Think fun.
Choosing a Focal Point or Theme
Ask your child to choose an inspiration piece. Explain that the item he chooses will be what his bedroom design is based upon. He may choose a toy space ship, a favorite piece of clothing, a book, or even a picture of his favorite vacation spot.
Once his inspiration piece is determined, ask why he likes that particular item.
The room design and theme will then revolve around your child's inspiration piece. Did your little one pick a rocket? Try an outer space theme. Cartoon characters? Go with a movie or TV them. An old shirt? Create a fashion or comfort theme. Postcard? Build a travel, culture, or destination theme.
Install a small shelf for your child's inspiration piece to be presented on once the redecorating project is completed.
Color Creativity
Wall color is something your child will have to live with for a while, so make sure the color you decide on is one he really likes.
Instead of purchasing pictures to hang on the walls, paint giant amoeba-like polka dots or an imperfect wavy line diagonally around the room. Be creative, and don't be afraid to experiment. An arched window can be transformed into a sunshine if orange triangles are painted around the edges to form rays. A door becomes a rocket ship if the interior is painted in bright stripes and a cone is painted above the doorjamb.
