Q&A: Can I breastfeed and use formula at the same time?

There is no problem for the baby combining the two. Many, many women do this. But for the first six weeks or so, while your milk production is getting established, try to breastfeed exclusively, or at least offer the breast at each feeding first. This way, your body gets the appropriate signals from the baby's sucking to continue producing milk. Once you have the breastfeeding going well (you feel like you have enough and the baby seems satisfied and is gaining weight), you can substitute formula at the times of your convenience.

For most women, it's easier to have a full breastmilk supply and tailor down, rather than not to have enough and tailor up. Some mothers do this with incredible ease. Others have problems. If you are having problems or questions, explain your plan to your pediatrician and ask for the name or a breastfeeding consultant.
