Q&A: My 1-month-old has a rash. What can I do?

Newborns and early infants can get a variety of rashes. Most are not serious but can be annoying, unsightly, or require special care.
Milia is the name for a specific rash that usually disappears in the first two to three weeks of life. The rash surfaces in very small (1–2 mm), firm, pearly white or yellowish spots caused by trapped secretions from glands on the skin. Usually this rash surfaces on the nose or across the chin, and also on the palate and gums in the mouth. Milia doesn't itch.

From what I can tell by your description, your child's rash could be several things (other than Milia). Seborrhea is a scaly, reddish rash that usually centers on the scalp (cradle cap) but can extend into the eyebrows and ears. Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, can begin around two months of age, especially in families with a history of allergies or asthma. This first appears as a red, bumpy, itchy rash on the cheeks, ear lobes, or forehead. Eczema can become very itchy and uncomfortable, and scratching can lead to infection.

If what is going on is bothersome to you and your baby, I would recommend a second visit to your pediatrician, both for a more definate diagnosis and perhaps for some treatment advice.
