11 Things I Want My Daughter to Grow Up Knowing
Today is the International Day of the Girl, a day established by the United Nations with a mission "to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls' lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential." Though my daughter is only 11 months old, I want her to live each day knowing her worth, her light, her importance in the world. In honor of the Day of the Girl, here are 11 things I want my baby daughter to grow up knowing.
Anything is Possible
Dream big, my sweet girl. You can do and be it all. Anything is possible.
Stay True to Yourself
Always live your truth. Don’t compromise your integrity. Stand tall. Be yourself, always.
Beauty Really Does Come From Within
Know that it’s what’s inside, what’s in your heart that makes you beautiful.
Embrace Your Heritage
Be proud of who you are. Embrace your blended heritage. Carry on the traditions and cultures of both your Welsh/English and your Japanese sides. Have tea with your sashimi. Let your British, proper side temper your Samurai blood.
You Don't Need the Thigh Gap
Love your body. You don’t ever need to change it. Just be healthy. If I can throw a football through a gap between your thighs, I’m definitely also throwing you a sandwich. And french fries. And a big slice of chocolate cake. But seriously, whether you are skinny or thick, tall or short, gap or not, you are perfect, just the way you are.
Appreciate Your Grandparents
Let them inspire you and give you strength and words of wisdom (And candy and other things that I don’t let you have). They will teach you about your family history. They have so much knowledge and so much love. Listen to their stories. Study their faces. Know them. Love them.
Love Yourself Before You Love a Man
Love who you are, my precious girl. You are whole. You are complete. When you truly love yourself, you will bring to you someone who honors and respects all that you are. Someone who sees and supports your truth. Someone who is also confident. (aka, Not someone like that guy in the viral “Drake Hands” video.)
Live In the Moment
See the beauty all around you in every moment. There are miracles happening around you. Be present. Breathe in, and send love out. See the good in people. Be kind and compassionate. Life is beautiful.
Always Be Grateful
Always have gratitude in your heart. There is so much for which to be thankful.
You Are Amazing!
Never forget that you are a precious gift to this world. There is no one like you. Let your light shine bright, my love. You are amazing!
You Are Loved
You are so loved, and always will be. Forever and ever.
Though our baby wasn't too keen on learning the proper baby signing gestures, she's certainly learned how to express how she's feeling and what she wants in her own way. Here's my baby's version of baby sign language.view gallery
