Acupuncture and Acupressure for Discomforts of Pregnancy

by Jennifer Lacey

Possible Side Effects

When administered properly, little or no side effects occur during acupressure treatment; however, if a practitioner is careless in using acupuncture techniques, certain serious side effects have been documented, including bacterial infection or Hepatitis B. These conditions are caused from the use of non-sterilized needles. Practitioners now commonly use disposable needles to help to prevent these conditions.

Words of Advice

There are a few things you should do before seeking an acupuncture or acupressure treatment. Make an appointment to discuss the specialist's methods and philosophical approach to acupuncture. "If a pregnant woman wants to try acupuncture, it is important that she feels comfortable with the practitioner, find out if she/he is a physician or someone who has been properly trained in one of the acupuncture schools," states Dr. Bynum.

Currently, about 30 US states require a therapist to have a license and/or certificate to practice acupuncture, but requirements vary from state to state. Organizations such as the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture or the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine can help to provide assistance with further information and help to locate an acupuncture/acupressure therapist in or near your hometown.
