Q&A: What if the line on my pregnancy test isn't very dark?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I found out that I was pregnant about two weeks ago. Although I have not been to my OB-GYN yet, by mine and my family doctor's calculations, I am a little over 8 weeks along (counting from the first day of my last period). I did another pregnancy test this morning just for my own piece of mind, since this first trimester can be a trying time on your nerves to say the least. The test was positive, but the line was not that dark. I have been drinking a lot of water. Could that affect it? Does it really matter if the line is not that dark? It was a distinct line. Am I being too paranoid? You probably guessed that I'm a first time Mom. I'm just so excited, and I want everything to be ok. Can you ease my fears?

Dilution of urine with a lot of hydration can definitely affect the intensity of the line. But if there's any question, a blood test that actually counts the amount of HCG molecule is the way to go, specifically, two in a row showing a rise.
