I think I might be pregnant. What is hCG?
-
HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, is the hormone that is produced by cells in the embryo and placenta. When the embryo implants in the uterus, the hCG is absorbed into the mother's bloodstream and can be measured. The blood circulates through the kidneys and is filtered through the kidneys into the urine and can be measured there as well.
The main function of hCG is to stimulate the ovaries to continue the production of which maintains the uterine lining so the fetus can continue to develop.
