Q&A: I'm on the Pill but I feel like I'm pregnant. Am I?
I had a traumatic delivery and am trying to get my periods regulated with birth control pills. My breasts have become tender and bigger. I'm worried that I'm pregnant, even though the pregnancy test was negative. Any advice?
Being on the birth control pill is called “pseudopregnancy,” because it suppresses ovulation by making the body think it’s pregnant. It does this by supplying enough hormones (like in pregnancy) so that the events leading up to ovulation aren’t stimulated to occur.
But because being on the pill is a pseudopregnancy, you can get similar symptoms as pregnancy, like breast enlargement and tenderness, nausea, swelling, etc. Let your health care provider make the call, but you’re probably just sensitive to that particular pill. Try another one at your doctor’s recommendation.
