Home Pregnancy Tests
Feeling a little queasy and out of sorts? Could you be pregnant? Before you race out to buy a home pregnancy test (HPT), learn about the major brands currently available and find out which one might be best for you.
How Home Pregnancy Tests (HPTs) Work
HPTs determine whether you are pregnant based on your level of the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), which is released by the placenta and can be detected in your urine. Your body makes 25 miu (milli-international units) of hCG around 10 days after conception. If the test that you take is geared to detect an hCG level higher than what your body has produced, it may give you a false negative. Your test results can also be affected if you are taking certain medications—such as Pregnyl, Profasi, Pergonal, Humegon—that contain hCG.
To ensure that your test is accurate, be sure to follow the directions carefully and wash your hands before you conduct the test. Use your first morning urine as a sample for optimal results.
