Q&A: My sonogram doesn't correspond to my due date.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am 16 weeks pregnant and had a sonogram yesterday. The baby's head is on my bladder and it's feet are "up in the air." Isn't it supposed to have turned by now? Also, the sonogram said that I was 17 weeks 5 days instead of 16 weeks. Why is this and what does it mean?

Usually, if an ultrasound is one week or less off from the last period dates, we go with the last period dates, accepting a one week "grace" error inherent to ultrasound. But yours is almost two weeks, so some fine tuning may be necessary with another ultrasound to firm up your real due date. Also, babies don't "lock in" to position until 32 weeks, so your baby's position is of no consequence.
