Q&A: What if one of the twins gets stuck during delivery?

I'm just a few days from my due date with twins and I can't stop worrying about labor. What if one of the twins gets stuck?

You have made it through the whole pregnancy, all the way to full term with twins. That is quite an accomplishment!

Most moms-to-be worry about labor. You are probably used to having a predictable, pain-free life, and childbirth is full of unknowns. When will labor start? How will it go? How much will it hurt? What if something goes wrong? Will I need a C-section? What will recovery be like? You may also want to keep in mind some of the positive questions: Who will be there with me to share this experience? How will it feel to see the babies for the first time? How should I memorialize this momentous day?

You will not be alone in labor. Choose family or friend(s) to be with you who will help you feel comfortable and confident. A doula (professional labor assistant) can really help with non-medical comfort measures in labor, and with understanding what is happening during childbirth. Your obstetrical team is trained to watch for complications and provide care to you through this experience. They know how to handle emergencies, and how to assist with the birth of the twins, be it vaginal or Cesarean. You can't predict exactly what will happen—you just need to set things up for the best, surrounding yourself with support and capable care.

Nothing I can tell you now will totally take away your worries. The best I can tell you is to keep labor in perspective. It is a day or so in your life, and then you will have two new members of your family to love forever. Good luck to you!
