Baby Name Ideas from the Olympic Games

Great names in sports from history and today

Looking for an inspiring name for your new baby? Look no further than the Olympic Games, coming your way every two years-summer and winter. You'll find unique names, traditional names, and international names, plus models of strength, courage, and character.

Olympic Origins: The Boys

The 12 ruling gods of Ancient Greece lived, so mythology tells it, on Mount Olympus. The original athletic competitions (developed around 776 BC to promote peace between warring regions) took place in the area near Mount Olympus called Olympia, and so took the name. There were seven male gods, each known commonly by two names since the Roman Empire. These aren't your everyday baby names:

Zeus (aka Jupiter or Jove by the Romans)
Poseidon (aka Neptune)
Ares (aka Mars)
Hades (aka Pluto)
Apollo—The one god the Greeks and Romans called by the same name. His namesake Apolo Anton Ohno (pictured) was a US medalist in short-track speed skating in the 2006 and 2002 Olympic Games. And a contestant on Dancing with the Stars.
Hermes (aka Mercury)
Hephaestus (aka Vulcan)
