Q&A: I experienced bleeding at 14 weeks and the doctor said it was okay, but I wonder if I should be concerned.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am 14 weeks pregnant. When I was five weeks pregnant I had some spotting. I followed up with my doctor, and he ran the necessary tests to make sure that the baby was fine. I was out of town last week and the same thing happened, only with a little more blood and it lasted three days. I went to the emergency room and they ran the same tests that my doctor ran before and everything came back fine. My doctor just advised that since the results were normal he would see me at my next visit, which is 2/19. Should I be concerned? This is my second pregnancy. My first was completely normal and I've had no miscarriages or abortions. What could be causing the bleeding?

It might be cervicitis, which is an inflammation of the cervix caused by yeast or bacterial infection. If you want to get aggressive to rule this out, your doctor would have to do tests to see if you have this condition, which is usually harmless to the baby.
