I am having a sonogram done at the hospital at 18 weeks. Should we be able to tell the sex of the baby?

Maybe. Ultrasounds are common practice between 18 and 20 weeks of pregnancy. During this ultrasound, the technician will be evaluating and measuring your baby to make sure she—or he—is developing normally. While this ultrasound is technically about looking into your unborn baby's health, it's true that for many moms the most exciting part of the procedure is finding out whether they'll be buying blue booties or pink ones.
If your baby is cooperative, meaning he or she is positioned so that the sex organs are visible, the technician should be able to tell your baby's gender. But oftentimes the baby isn't in the right position, so you still might need to wait until he or she is born to know for sure.
