Q&A: I got pregnant while on the pill and want to make sure it didn't hurt the baby.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I got pregnant while on the pill. Will this hurt my baby, or make a multiple gestation more likely?

The increased risk of twins is usually when a woman becomes pregnant within two months of stopping birth control pills. I would think multiple gestation is less likely when becoming pregnant while on the pill. There are theoretical dangers to this type of hormonal exposure to the fetus. In my practice of over twenty years, during which I've seen my share of infants exposed to hormones, I've never seen a problem. Your doctor may recommend a Level Three ultrasound to look the baby over very thoroughly, just to be sure.
