Q&A: Could past abortions affect my current pregnancy?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am 31 years old and five weeks pregnant. Regrettably, I have had three abortions, the last one was over seven years ago. There didn't seem to be any complications with the procedures. However, it did take my husband and I a while to conceive, approximately six months. In addition, I have had a slight, dull pain in my lower right abdominal area. Should I be concerned and what are some of the possible complications that could arise from the past abortions?

Taking six months to get pregnant at age 31 isn't abnormal.

Generally, abortions don't tend to cause complications in subsequent pregnancies. If there were an overzealous scraping of the uterus during one, this could cause scarring and affect implantation. Even though I've never done an abortion, I've delivered many babies from women who have, and I've never seen a complication like this happen. The pain is probably just a "growing" pain--but let your doctor know.
