Q&A: Is spotting during early pregnancy normal?

I am 7 weeks pregnant and experiencing very slight spotting. It's so slight it's probably more accurate to call it a tan/brown discharge. I'm not having any pain though. I've been trying to convince myself that as long as it's not red, heavier or painful, I'm probably OK. Please tell me I'm right. My first doctor appointment isn't until week 9.

Yes, you are probably right! One way to decide if what you're seeing is blood is to think about if it looks like the first or last bit of your period. If yes, it probably is blood. But even if it is, first-trimester bleeding is quite common, and unless heavy or associated with cramps is unlikely to represent a serious problem.

Here's the story: all first-trimester bleeding technically falls into the category of "threatened miscarriage" and some of those pregnancies will not progress. The usual recommendations fall into three categories: identifying serious pregnancy complications, taking care of yourself while there is some bleeding, and assuring that everything is fine.

Warning signs: Heavy bleeding, significant pain, or fever can represent serious medical issues during the first trimester. If any of these things occurs, you need to seek medical attention immediately, either with your future doctor or midwife, or through an emergency facility.

Self-care: To decrease the chance of infection during first-trimester bleeding we usually recommend not putting anything in the vagina: no douching, no tampons, no intercourse. Sanitary napkins can be used if necessary.

Getting some answers: Ultrasound will answer your most heartfelt question: what does this mean for me and my baby-to-be? Once a heartbeat is seen on ultrasound, the chance of miscarriage drops significantly, and you will hopefully be on your way to smooth sailing.

I hope everything works out for you. So far, it sounds OK. Good luck!
