My doctor started me on metformin while I was trying to concieve and once we were successful he has had me continue to take it along with progesterone supplements. He said that I am to take this through the first trimester. Should I be concerned about the effects on the fetus? Thank you, Laura

It seems that the problem with metformin is that it could cause hypoglycemia in the newborn if you were to take it the whole pregnancy. Since you're going to be stopping at the second trimester, this isn't an issue.
You're probably on it for polycystic ovarian syndrome, which is a problem with your insulin. First trimester risk from hypoglycemia is the highest, so improving your insulin potency (with the Metformin) during this time is a good trade-off--I think the benefits far outweigh the minimal risks (FDA Categrory C). It sounds like your doctor is on the ball!
