Q&A: Is it normal to be completely exhausted during pregnancy?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I am 8 weeks pregnant and completely exhausted. I know it is normal to be tired during pregnancy, but this goes beyond tired. I'm usually very active and I don't even have the energy to take the dog for a walk without being exhausted afterwards. I could run three miles before I got pregnant. Is this normal or should I check with my doctor? What can cause this type of exhaustion?

Fatigue is the first sign of pregnancy. Your exhaustion is probably due to your body's increased progesterone, which can make you sleepy. Your energy levels should improve after your first trimester.

But...

Check with your doctor. Hypothyroidism, anemia, depression, and other causes of fatigue need to be considered.
