Q&A: I'm worried I might miscarriage because my HCG levels are off.

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

Hi, I have had a previous miscarraige. Now that I am 8 weeks pregnant, my HCG levels are wacky. The other day I had some spotting, the doctor gave me an HCG test, wich was 7,886. And 48 hours later it was 10,306. Obvioulsy it did not double. Am I going to have another miscarraige?

There are variations in the "48 hour rule" of doubling, especially the later into the 1st trimester you get, so you might be O.K. I would say the best predictor for fetal well-being at this time is ultrasound with a fetal heart rate greater than 110.
