Your Guide to Living Green during Pregnancy
There’s no better time to go green than when you’re trying to conceive or already expecting a baby. Dangerous toxins and nasty chemicals lurk in some surprising places. Here are some of the major culprits and tips on how you can live greener.

Beauty and Skin Products
Many beauty products are loaded with chemicals linked to birth defects, carcinogens, and ingredients derived from nonrenewable petroleum. You can download a list of dangerous chemicals from National Geographic's The Green Guide's "Dirty Dozen Ingredients In Personal Care Products" (January/February 2004 issue).
Even sticking to products labeled organic might not be enough, because our government doesn't regulate personal products like it does food. "Read the labels carefully. If you don't recognize the name of an ingredient, it's probably something you don't want to be using," says Joanna Vargas, president/esthetician for Joanna Vargas Skin Care.
Instead, pamper yourself with organic body scrubs and body butters. Coconut milk is great for the skin, and antioxidants such as argan oil, almond oil, and rosehip seed oil fortify the skin with essential fatty acids, says Vargas.
