Q&A: Is it safe to use biaxin during pregnancy?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I have had a bad cough for over 2 weeks. After trying some of the safe otc medications, I went back to my Dr. who prescribed an antibiotic--biaxin. I checked with my ob who said it was okay to take, but I also read that it is a category C medication, and should not be taken during pregnancy unless no other alternative is available. I am 10 1/2 wks pregnant, and allergic to penicillin. Can you comment on whether or not it is safe to take Biaxin, as directed, for 10 days in order to clear up my respiratory infection?

That is purely a judgement call on the part of your OB. Remember, no one but him (her) is best qualified to determine how the risks vs. benefits apply to you specifically. Category C is used all of the time by doctors who weight the risks vs. benefits. If you're particularly nervous about this, it's time for a conference with your doctor about your concerns.
