Q&A: Do I need more folic acid than my prenatal provides?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

Should I be taking extra folic acid after I am pregnant or is the prenatal vitamin providing enough at 1mg? Can I continue to use my nasaqort AQ for my sinuses and Mucinex (guifensen-mucus thiner)?

There are vaying degrees of sinus problems, from aggravating to serious. So you must ask your doctor to weigh the benefits versus the risk of these agents, although I wouldn't have a problem having one of my own patients use them if needed.

One mg. of folic acid is PLENTY. In fact, 40% of that is what's considered the recommendation, so you even have a lot of slack there. Don't take any extra--not harmful, but not necessary.
