Q&A: If I had food poisoning could it have hurt my unborn baby?

by Dr. Gerard M. DiLeo

I had food poisoning in the beginning of week seven. My symptom was severe diarrhea, but it only lasted for 24 hours. I know that is a crucial time for my baby's organ development. Should I be worried?

There are several types of food poisoning. Protozoan, amoebic, parasite, bacterial—all can be "food poisoning." Most of these infections won't cross the placenta to the baby, but no one can answer without knowing which type was suspected. You need to talk to your healthcare provider about which type you had. Most likely you're fine, but check with your doctor just to be sure.
